Bio

Nel 2018 ho pubblicato Bach & Tárrega: Preludes and Dances. L’anno successivo è uscito Time Regained: Early Works for Solo Guitar, disco monografico dedicato a Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

My work has developed primarily around the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the repertoire of twentieth-century and contemporary composers.

I perform in Italy and abroad, as a soloist and in chamber ensembles ranging from a piano duo with Alessandro Stella to larger groups such as the WunderKammer Orchestra.

In 2016 I released my first album, Catalunya, devoted to music by Jaume Pahissa, Gaspar Cassadó, Miguel Llobet and Manuel de Falla. I recorded it on a guitar built in 1925 by Antonio Emilio Pascual Viudes and strung with gut strings. Radio Classica devoted an edition of Ritratti, conceived and presented by Luca Ciammarughi, entirely to the album.

In 2017 I took part with Carles Trepat in concerts marking the bicentenary of the birth of Antonio de Torres. That same year Marco Tullio Giordana asked me to record Bach’s chorale Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, BWV 639, in my arrangement for guitar; the recording was used over the closing credits of his film Due soldati.

In 2018 I released Bach & Tárrega: Preludes and Dances. The following year saw the release of Time Regained: Early Works for Solo Guitar, a monographic album devoted to Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

In 2020 I performed music by Hans Werner Henze in Fuga a tre voci, written and directed by Marco Tullio Giordana and based on the correspondence between Henze and Ingeborg Bachmann, with Alessio Boni and Michela Cescon.

In 2021 I released As from far away, with music by John Dowland, Henze and Tōru Takemitsu. This was followed on Extended Place by (in)complete preludes (2022), the complete recording of Manuel Ponce’s Twenty-Four Preludes for guitar, and Tōru Takemitsu | Songbook (2024). A recording from the latter, The International in Takemitsu’s arrangement for guitar, was used in Julian Radlmaier’s film Phantoms of July (2025).

There are pieces we internalize so intimately that we come to consider them “elements” of our own life. The first time I saw Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Solaris, and the so-called levitation scene where this music appears, I found myself facing a reversal of perspective. How could this music, which I did not know, know everything about me?

This premise is meant to say that arranging, and continuing to perform in concert, a piece so contrapuntally intricate does not represent, for me, a challenge to the limits of the guitar or to a performer’s possibilities. On the contrary, the familiar condition I have established with this music has guided me, in all the years since, in my search for a repertoire I could identify with.

A recording of mine of this piece appears in the closing credits of Marco Tullio Giordana’s film Due soldati.

I began working on the arrangement of the Cello Suite No. II in the spring of 2015. The suite was eventually published in the album Bach & Tárrega: Preludes and Dances, released in 2018, where it was presented alongside several preludes by Francisco Tárrega and Bach’s triptych, Prelude, Fugue, and Allegro (BWV 998).

For this arrangement, I opted to shift the key from the original D minor to G minor to better suit the instrument’s register. Consequently, the tuning is adjusted with the fifth string in G and the sixth in D.

The sources I consulted include the manuscripts of Johann Peter Kellner, Anna Magdalena Bach, and Johann Nikolaus Schober. From these, I derived the embellishments in the text and, more importantly, the phrasing slurs, which I consider crucial indicators of the musical phrasing and breath.

It is important to note that this edition does not aim to provide a critical, musicological, or historical study, but rather reflects the necessarily subjective perspective of a performer.
